CMPD has arrested a suspect in a case involving a shooting at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg child care center. The suspect is charged with a variety of charges in connection with the incident. The suspect is currently being held in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
A search warrant was executed by the CMPD SWAT team with the help of the FBI. After the suspect was arrested, the CMPD said he was charged with the “false statement, damage to property, attempted murder, and ethnic intimidation.”
The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Tyson Lee Corpening. The CMPD said Corpening threw a rock with “various threats toward children” through the window of the day care. The CMPD also said Corpening had a green light when he entered the intersection.
Corpening was later charged with two counts of ethnic intimidation, possession of a firearm by a felon, and assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held on an attempted first-degree murder charge.
A second incident occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. at the University area. The suspect was not in the home when officers arrived. A second incident is currently under investigation.
